LSYO SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA

Symphonic Orchestra rehearses and performs grade 3 and higher orchestral music from all musical eras. This orchestra is the first introduction to a full symphonic experience for most performers. Along with string musicians, wind, brass, and percussion players are trained on ensemble playing techniques that may not be included in their middle and high school experience.

It is recommended that musicians of this ensemble should have at least 3 years of private instruction and 2 years of experience in an ensemble. It is also recommended that they be proficient in the following:

 

Strings 

  • Able to perform 2 octave major and minor scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats

  • Hold a comprehensive understanding of 3rd position and familiarity with 2nd and 4th positions

  • Incorporate foundational vibrato

  • Perform solo repertoire in late Suzuki Book 3 or in Suzuki Book 4 (or the equivalent level)

 

Winds/brass 

  • Able to perform 1 octave major scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats on the instrument (not concert pitch)

  • Demonstrate a well developed tone, control of different articulation patterns, and an understanding of pitch adjustments

 

Percussion 

  • Able to perform 1 octave major scales up to 2 sharps and 2 flats

  • Able to perform essential rudiments such as rolls, flams, drags/ruffs, and accented/non accented patterns
