How does art inspire art?
Student visual artists of all ages across Loudoun County submitted creative responses to the music of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s grand suite Pictures at an Exhibition. The works were displayed in a live community art gallery at the Loudoun Symphony's Art Comes Alive concert on Saturday, April 26, 2025. See some of the artists' inspired creations below!

I like listening to this music very much. Imagining the castle is an interesting thing. I took two days to finish this piece and really enjoyed it.

Inspired by “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks”
Julia Hoisington
Listening to the “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks” makes me feel so happy. Reading some background of the piece I really enjoyed it. I picked this one because I have also played the violin since I was five years old. I enjoy the movement, and I want to able to play this one soon.

The Graceful Flyer
Inspired by “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks”
Avantika Nambiar
The music was light and lively so I wanted to do something that was bouncing up and down. A ballerina felt right because in some songs they seem to levitate, but are still graceful. The music felt a lot like that, graceful and lively, always on your toes. The music also made me want to emphasize shadows because the music felt mischievous and shadow felt like the right thing to do. The music made me add a lot of details to my piece for how I felt.

Castle

I drew this artwork when the music was soft. It reminded me of summer. And when the music was loud and was giving spooky vibes, it inspired me to draw the other side dark.

The Avid of Dawn
Inspired by “The Bogatyr Gates” / “The Great Gate of Kiev”
Meghan H. Riddick
The movement I was inspired by for my piece was "The Great Gate of Kiev." I played it a few times as I tried to imagine what came to mind. Some parts seemed dramatic and calm, and that was what inspired the main point of my artwork. I thought of an old town with a dark color scheme. In order to add a somewhat dramatic appeal, I added a spotlight onto the girl in the artwork to put emphasis on her. Additionally, the song made me think of a time frame from around the 1800s. To incorporate that, I added a belltower, older-looking houses, and transportation.
I was heavily inspired by clocks and time, as well as the music's original painting. I included a bell tower in my artwork which was inspired by the original art. The title of the music piece also made me think of opening gates which I included in my inking. To conclude, the music was very unique. I liked the dramatic appeal of the music and the time-inspired details I included in my piece. Overall, I am really proud of my artwork, and I think I accomplished the theme I was wanting.

After Dark
Inspired by “The Old Castle”
Rowan Hogye
This movement always just made me think of quiet: not necessarily bad, or scary, but quiet and kind of dark. It has a feeling of serenity, which I also get from pictures like the one I submitted. It looks like just a normal lamppost and a street lamp, but the atmosphere of the situation feels very quiet (and even kind of tense), like the feeling you get from walking alone at night. Also, the fog adds to the feeling of serenity, and adds a feeling of mystery to the situation.

The Witch
Inspired by “The Hut on Hen's Legs (Baba Yaga)”
Eva Ulreich
This piece depicts a moonlit Baba Yaga lurking deep in the darkened forest. It was created digitally using Procreate’s textured brushes to imitate a painterly style. I was heavily inspired by the musical piece “Baba Yaga” and the eerie and mischievous tone that it brought. For this piece, I wanted to capture Baba Yaga’s sinister and mysterious presentation. This piece was a good challenge for atmospheric lighting and environmental colors.
